Scarborough High Open Space Action Group
Bulletin February

The Scarborough High Open Space Action Group has welcomed the election of the State Labour Government.

We received fantastic support from Labour in Opposition and they have made a commitment to revisit the proposal to sell off the Scarborough High School and the broken promise of the Liberal Government to keep the school gymnasium and swimming pool.

Alannah MacTiernan is the new Planning Minister. Alannah attended our first public meeting and has visited the site on other occasions. She sponsored the Disallowance Motion in Parliament and received the support of her Labour colleagues.

Unfortunately the vote of an Independent in the Upper House meant the defeat of the Disallowance Motion and the rezoning of the land from Crown Reserve to Urban went ahead.

The City of Stirling is now amending the local District Planning Scheme to enable the land to be subdivided for 129 houses.

Submissions on this amendment close on 20 February 2001. Objections to the amendment should be sent to the Planning Department, City of Stirling, Civic Place, Stirling 6021.

We have produced a flyer with "Ideas for Submissions" which is attached. "Ideas for Submission" (in MS Word format)

When the City of Stirling has completed its examination of the submissions it will make a recommendation to the WA Planning Commission but the Minister for Planning has the final say.

This is where Alannah comes in. She has promised us to conduct a comprehensive public consultation within proper planning guidelines taking into account the needs of the community. Unlike the former Government who simply wanted to sell the land for the revenue without any consideration of public opinion or local community recreation, leisure, education or environmental needs.

The newly elected local MP, John Quigley has supported us since the formation of the group and we are now looking forward to him taking the running on this issue.

This has been a hard fought campaign and although we may not get everything we want, the result of our hard work will be to save the majority of the site for the community.
